INAUGURAL EXHIBITION

MARK SCHOENING
Cloudcuckooland
March 11 – May 1, 2010

Opening Reception
Saturday, March 13th 6 to 8pm

Blythe Projects is pleased to present Cloudcuckooland; celebrating Blythe Projects’ inaugural show in the Culver City Arts District and Mark Schoening’s first solo exhibition in Los Angeles.

Impressions made during Schoening’s recent move from his native east coast to the swells of Los Angeles are the center of his recent series, Cloudcuckooland. Cloudcuckooland is an unrealistic state where everything is seemingly perfect; yet the truth remains, instability and chaos have become the norm. His palette of neon and metallic distracts, attracts and separates multiple layers within each composition. This results in a wildly active range of viewing possibilities. Each densely layered juncture is encased in a coat of resin. This acts as a lens allowing the viewer to experience multiple moments simultaneously. These ‘information explosions’, captured outside of time and space, reflect the world we have created for ourselves: a world where one must remain partially unaware of reality in order to exist.

A strong influence in Schoening’s work is the aesthetic generated by the high-speed flash photographs produced during the 1950’s at MIT. For the first time, we saw moments in time that had previously been impossible. Technology had frozen time. What seemed to be simple physical interactions and reactions had revealed a series of magnificent complexity and, at times, beautifully ordered chaos.

Mark Schoening received his BFA in painting from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston. He currently lives, works and plays in Los Angeles.
